Coverage selections for New York drivers will vary widely depending on your individual needs, but all drivers in the state will need to meet required minimum coverage requirements. Take a moment to learn more about your choices for auto insurance coverage in NY and what is required by law.
There are four types of compulsory insurance that you are required to purchase under state law. Compulsory insurance is the minimum amount of coverage required by state law. These four compulsory coverages are:
Bodily Injury Liability protects you if you are responsible for an accident in which someone is injured or killed.
Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto pays for injuries sustained by you and your passengers caused by an uninsured motorist.
Damage to Someone Else’s Property covers the damage your vehicle causes to someone else’s property, such as your car running into someone’s house or car.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) pays for medical expenses, loss of income, and other miscellaneous expenses regardless of fault.
Accidents can often result in damage that exceeds the state required coverage limits. Depending on your individual needs, you might want to purchase increased limits on required coverages like Optional Bodily Injury to Others, Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto, Damage to Someone Else’s Property, or consider additional types of coverages.
Here are some examples of optional car insurance coverage that Plymouth Rock offers:
Collision is not required in NY, but if your car gets damaged in an accident (without another liable party), it will help you get your own vehicle repaired or replaced. Your lender will require this kind of coverage to protect their investment if you have a loan.
Comprehensive pays for damage to your car caused by events such as fire, theft or vandalism; in other words, damage caused by something other than a collision.
Substitute Transportation reimburses you for a rental car or other substitute transportation up to your selected daily reimbursable limit and up to your selected number of reimbursable days if your car is damaged from a covered Comprehensive, Collision or Limited Collision claim.
This is just a brief summary of these coverages. Additional terms and exclusions apply. Actual coverage is subject to the language of the policy as issued. Please refer to your policy for more information or contact a local independent Plymouth Rock agent.
