FAQs for YUBI®

About the YUBI Program

YUBI® stands for Your Usage-Based Insurance. It is a telematics program offered by Plymouth Rock Assurance that utilizes the proprietary mobile telematics app (“YUBI 2.0”) to gather information about your driving habits and help you become a smarter, safer driver.
  • The YUBI program can save you money on your car insurance policy.
  • The YUBI program is voluntary to opt in. For Pennsylvania policies sold after January 27, 2023, directly through the Plymouth Rock Sales Center or online through the Plymouth Rock eSales Platform, all drivers covered on the policy are required to enroll and participate in the YUBI program.
  • You may get a participation discount up to 10% on your car insurance for simply enrolling in the YUBI program, and with good driving behavior, your discount may increase at the time of your policy renewal up to 29%. A small percentage of drivers, about 10%, with poor driving behaviors may get a surcharge up to 31%.
  • To keep the initial discount, you must download the YUBI app, register, and log at least one trip within the first 30 days of policy issuance. For Pennsylvania policies sold after January 27, 2023, directly through the Plymouth Rock Sales Center or online through the Plymouth Rock eSales Platform, in order to keep the initial discount and maintain the policy, all drivers covered on the policy must download the YUBI app, register, and log at least one trip within the first 21 days of the policy’s effective date.
  • At the time of policy renewal, you may qualify for a permanent discount of up to 25% based on your driving behavior if you have met the minimum driving criteria (logging at least 30 trips and 300 miles during the first four months of your enrollment term). You may also qualify for an additional discount up to 5% based on the number of miles driven (annualized) for a combined total discount of up to 29%.
  • Drivers who drive a lot – greater than 22,500 miles a year – may receive a surcharge up to 5%. The mileage rating may be re-assessed every 12 months.
  • Even if you have already completed a trial period, you are encouraged to enroll in the YUBI program on your policy for the potential to maximize savings.
  • Make sure you opt-in to YUBI when completing your quote with Plymouth Rock.
  • You need a compatible mobile device, either an iPhone or an Android phone, running the current or previous 2 operating systems. GPS and accelerometer capabilities must be available on your phone. If you have been able to download “YUBI 2.0” from the app store, then your phone has the required capabilities.
  • Remember to register and log a trip within the first 30 days of policy issuance. For Pennsylvania policies sold after January 27, 2023, directly through the Plymouth Rock Sales Center or online through the Plymouth Rock eSales Platform, you must register and log a trip within the first 21 days of your policy’s effective date in order to retain your participation discount and policy.
  • If you have previously used the YUBI app and are still actively logged into the YUBI app, then you’re good to go.
  • When activated, the YUBI app uses the GPS system in your compatible mobile device to assess your driving habits, such as mobile use, speeding, smooth driving (braking and acceleration), total miles driven and time of the day.
  • The YUBI app only monitors your location while a trip is in progress.
  • Trip details are provided for each driving trip you take as well as a colored and/or numerical representation of your driving performance and detailed feedback based on your driving skills.
  • To complete registration with the YUBI app, download the “YUBI 2.0” app and register through the link that we send to your compatible mobile device after policy issuance.
  • Make sure to grant the app permission to access your GPS, location/network services and Motion & Fitness Activity (Apple only), and allow the app to run in the background (Android only). “Always Allow” is necessary for your trips to be automatically captured.
  • Drive as you normally would. You don’t need to have the app open when you are driving.
  • After each trip, you can see your trip details and performance in the app. You will receive detailed feedback and learn how you can further improve your driving skills.
  • If you are still actively logged into the YUBI app, then you’re good to go.
  • If you need to log into the app again, please enter the 10-digit mobile number you registered with to receive your access code.
  • If you deleted your YUBI app, please download the “YUBI 2.0” app from the App store on your mobile device. Enter the 10-digit mobile number you provided when registering to receive your access code and log in.
  • For policyholders, the first assessment period starts from the time you register with the YUBI app. In order to be able to calculate an accurate score at renewal, you need to record at least 30 trips and 300 miles, or use the YUBI app for 100 days before the assessment period ends. The first assessment period ends 45 days before the first renewal date after enrolling in the YUBI program.
  • In subsequent terms, you should continue to drive with the YUBI app to track your miles to continue to get a mileage-based rating and avoid a surcharge at subsequent renewals. Re-evaluation periods occur every 12 months after first renewal.
  • You need to log at least 30 trips and 300 miles between the previous assessment period end date and 45 days before each subsequent annual renewal.
  • If the minimum driving criteria is not met, you may be removed from the YUBI program and subject to a surcharge at renewal. For Pennsylvania policies sold after January 27, 2023, directly through the Plymouth Rock Sales Center or online through the Plymouth Rock eSales Platform, you may also be at risk of your policy being terminated.

Use of the YUBI App

  • The YUBI app is free to download and use if your policy is enrolled in Plymouth Rock’s YUBI program or if you are using the YUBI app for a trial period.
  • Mobile data charges may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. If you want to prevent data charges, you can set the app to transmit data using Wi-Fi-only in the Preferences section (although this will delay transmission of the data and your receipt of a score).
  • For an average commute of 1 hour each way, the YUBI app will use around 4.2MB of data, which is less memory than a digital photo. The trip is deleted after transmission, which will free up the memory, for transmission timing see below.
  • If you would like to only use Wi-Fi to transmit data, you can make this change in the Preferences section of the app.
  • If the YUBI app is set to use your mobile data, it will be sent during the course of a trip. If it’s set to transmit via Wi-Fi, the data will be saved and transmitted the next time your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. See the Preferences section of the app to change these settings.
  • For policyholders, changes to your cell phone number should be communicated to Plymouth Rock’s Customer Solutions Center (800-437-5556) so that the change can be updated in our policy system.
  • The YUBI app is always on, and therefore the icon is always visible. Also, there is a fixed notification in the pull-down notification menu so that you are aware that the app is running. These notifications cannot be removed unless you force stop the application. This would cause the app to stop running and prevent trips from being recorded.
  • Just search for “YUBI 2.0” in the app store from your new phone and download the app, then enter your cell phone number to login. You will be able to view your trip data from the new phone.
  • While a trip is in progress, the YUBI app will consume battery power comparable to other navigational apps. Battery usage while not in motion is negligible.
  • The YUBI app is set to a battery conservation level of 20%. This means that the app will pause recording when the battery level is below 20%. You can change this level by visiting the Preferences menu.
  • Your driving behavior is always kept confidential.
  • The YUBI app stores location-based and phone usage data from your trips and encrypts it prior to transmission. The data is transmitted to the servers of our third party vendor.
  • We may use your driving information to verify information on insurance policy applications and claim submissions/investigations.
  • We do not share any driver information with any 3rd parties unless we are required by law to do so.
  • For additional information about our privacy policy, please go to Plymouthrock.com/privacy-policy.

Trip Recording

  • In order for the app to automatically record your trips, you should grant the app Location access and “Always Allow” is necessary. For iOS devices, access to Motion & Fitness Activity is also required.
  • For Android devices, you should give the app location access and allow the app to run in the background for automatic trip capture.
  • Once you have the correct settings, the YUBI app is always on in the background and is automatically activated when you start a trip by detecting a faster and longer movement from one point to another. The app may continue to record after your trip has ended to ensure you are not sitting at a traffic light or in a traffic jam.
  • The YUBI app will not record trips if your battery level is too low. You can adjust the battery level limit from the Preferences menu. Technical challenges may also prevent trip capture, such as loss of GPS or mobile network connections. It can also take a few hours for a trip to appear on your phone depending on if you selected mobile data or Wi-Fi to transmit trips.
  • If you still do not see your trips, check Settings on your phone to make sure you have granted all necessary permissions to the app including GPS, location (“Always Allow” is needed), Motion & Fitness for iOS devices, and allowing the app to run in the background for Android devices.

How to Edit the Driver/Trip Tag

  • If you were a passenger in a vehicle or using another mode of transportation, you can edit the tag on the trip to reflect you that were not driving. • From your “Trips” listing, select the trip where you were a passenger in a vehicle or using another mode of transportation. Select the “I was not driving” option, then edit the tag to passenger, train, boat, bicycle, plane or walking. Click Confirm to lock in your change. Understanding My Driving Performance

  • The Red / Amber (yellow) / Green scale is a quick way to offer you visual feedback on your driver and trip component performance. Green indicates a better performance than amber (yellow), which is a better result than red. Green means you are likely to receive a discount at renewal based on your driving behaviors.
  • You may also see a numerical representation of your driving performance. Higher scores indicate better performance.
  • Overall performance is based on all of your trips that have been recorded by YUBI. The colors and/or scores for a single trip is based on your driving skills, such as smooth driving (accelerating and braking), time of day, speed and phone usage.
  • Smooth Driving: This is a measure of your level of anticipation of the traffic flows based on the amount of acceleration and braking that you perform throughout your trip. A good (green) score indicates that you are driving smoothly and safely.
  • Mobile Use: This component is based on how often you use your phone and how you use your phone while driving. It is a combination of your mental and physical distraction measured by how much you are interacting with your phone. Use of other apps such as streaming music and hands-free phone calls do not affect this score if you do not touch your phone while you are in motion. Remember, in some states, use of a mobile phone while driving is illegal, and some states require hands-free capability when using a phone while driving. Be sure to always comply with the law of the state in which you are driving.
  • Speed: This is a measure of the relative risk of a collision based on the speeds of the driver on each trip depending on the type of area the driver is in (residential, highway, super highway).
  • Fatigue: This is a measure of the risk of the driver losing concentration due to the length and monotony of each trip. To avoid driving fatigue, it is good practice to take breaks during long trips to avoid becoming excessively tired.
  • Time of day: This is a measure of the risk posed by other drivers on the road at various times of day when you are also driving. Late night trips are considered riskier.
  • Colors and scores will not display until you are designated as the driver of the trip. Only trips indicated as driver count towards your score and minimum driving criteria. The app itself does not calculate the score. Your driving data is sent to a server where scores are calculated, so how you select to transmit your driving data may also impact when your trip details will be available. You can view your trip details and performance sooner by allowing the app to use mobile data to transmit your driving data. Mobile data charges may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Using Wi-Fi delays the transmission of data until the next time you are connected to Wi-Fi. You can choose mobile data or Wi-Fi in the Preferences menu of the app.

YUBI Impact on My Policy

  • To qualify for a discount at renewal, you need to log at least 30 trips and 300 miles or use the app for a minimum of 100 days during the first assessment period.
  • If you do not meet the minimum driving criteria in the required timeframe, then any applicable discount will be removed at renewal and you may be subject to a surcharge at renewal. For Pennsylvania policies sold after January 27, 2023, directly through the Plymouth Rock Sales Center or online through the Plymouth Rock eSales Platform, you may also be at risk of your policy being terminated.
  • Each trip is scored using five components: smooth driving, speed, fatigue, time of day, and mobile use while driving. These components collectively help us determine your behavior-based score. Total miles driven are collected to calculate your mileage-based score.
  • If you reach the minimum driving criteria within the assessment period, your behavior-based score and mileage-based score will be used to calculate your renewal factor. This factor can range from being a discount (up to 29%) to a surcharge (up to 31%). Most drivers who successfully complete the evaluation earn a discount at renewal through their participation in YUBI. A small percentage of drivers with poor driving behaviors may get a surcharge.
  • To maximize your discount, you should drive smoothly and safely, keep a steady speed, take breaks during longer trips, avoid late night trips, and minimize handheld phone activities. Low mileage drivers may also qualify for better discounts.
  • Because your annual mileage is subject to change over time, we may require you to re-evaluate (using the YUBI app) prior to each annual anniversary.
    • This may allow low mileage drivers to continue to get the low mileage discount and those with higher annual mileage re-evaluate for a chance to get a lower rate.
    • We will not use this re-evaluation to change your behavior-based rating, only the mileage based rating.
    • You need to log at least 30 trips and 300 miles between the previous assessment period end date and 45 days before each annual renewal. Failure to do so may place you into a higher rated mileage band.
  • The YUBI program helps promote and reward safe driving behaviors. Drivers may get a participation discount up to 10% upon enrolling on their car insurance policy. After finishing the minimum driving requirement during the first assessment period, most drivers will continue to get a discount at renewal. The maximum discount you could get is 29%. A small percentage of drivers with the poor driving behaviors and high annualized mileage may get up to a 31% surcharge.
